Karin Davie: Dangerous Curves
Through Sunday, May 14, 2006

A true innovator, Davie redefines the modernist convention of stripe painting by inserting gesture and the artist's hand back into optical, hard-edged, geometric convention. Her work explores the boundaries between representation and abstraction while simultaneously alluding to the figure, memory, and landscape.

Great Masters Series: Vincent van Gogh
May 28 to September 23, 2006

This summer, visitors to the AGH will have the unique opportunity to admire a select group of masterpieces by Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890), loaned from museums near and far. Van Gogh is one of the most broadly loved artists of all time; his canvases consistently set record prices on the market. However, misconceptions persist regarding his life, art and the sources of his originality. Van Gogh zealously embraced his artistic profession and prolifically created close to a thousand paintings in a career spanning only a decade (1880-90). This focus exhibition unites five major works from each of the key periods of van Gogh's career-his early Dutch period (1880-85), his time in Paris (1886-87), his first mature period in Arles (1888-89), and his last years in Saint-RŽmy and Auvers-interpreting the images contextually in order to provide a richer understanding of van Gogh's approach, and to allow viewers to discover the roots and development of his style and themes.

Somewhat Dotty

Rodman Hall Arts Centre
Nude or Naked?
Selections from the Permanent Collection
May 12 - August 27, 2006
Opening reception Friday, May 12 at 7 pm

It is with this collection of drawings from Rodman HallÕs permanent collection that one can question and compare the two terms; naked and nude. Each artist has approached the female subject in a different manner. Some have chosen to see ÒherÓ as a landscape - the body as a pleasing arrangement of forms and shapes. But others have captured intimate moments of their subjects which seem to connect us to an individual.

Rhonda Weppler & Trevor Mahovsky
May 12 - July 2, 2006
Opening Friday, May 12 at 7 p.m.

These Vancouver artists are specialists in the translation of everyday objects into wryly poetic monuments to consumer culture.Ê They produce representations of common objects such as staples, coffee cups, flags, shopping carts and cars. Using processes such as casting, tracing or embossing, to record the shape and surface characteristics of an object, the finished works translate the forms into commentary.

Kumlyun Lee:
Listen for light. See sound. Feel human presence.

July 13 - September 15, 2006
Tour the exhibition with the artist Thursday, July 13 at 7 p.m.

Korean artist Kumlyun Lee will suspend 400 motion-sensitive tubes of rice paper from the gallery ceiling at Rodman Hall in her installation. Visitors to the gallery will walk through the numerous paths surrounded by the paper tubes, their movement initiating sensor activated coloured light and sounds.Ê In recent years Kumlyun Lee has been exploring the possibilities of digital technology as a medium for a reconnection of nature and humanity.Ê For Kumyun Lee, it is the interaction of the spectator with the art work which brings the art to life.

Ed Pien: Tracing Night
October 1 - November 12, 2006

Tracing Night is a veil of suspended glassine paper 45 feet wide by 12 feet high that cuts across the gallery in a gentle curve. Pien's large-scale ink drawings on the glassine depict a girl asleep, accompanied by images that appear from her dream.
