Founded
at Buffalo State College in 1966, the Burchfield-Penney Art Center is a museum
dedicated to arguably the most important twentieth-century American watercolorist,
Charles E. Burchfield. Burchfield spent the majority of his life living and painting
right here in Western New York. The
Center holds the world's largest Burchfield collection, comprised of over 680
art works that comprehensively represent the artist's career through paintings,
drawings, doodles, prints, wallpapers, and commercial designs. The museum is the
national study center for Charles E. Burchfield holdings. It includes an extensive
archive that includes his correspondence and personal journals, as well as an
elaborate re-creation of his artists studio. From
1991 through 1994, the Center received a series of gifts from collector Dr. Charles
Rand Penney of more than l,300 works by Western New York artists. This donation
included paintings, sculpture, craft art, Roycroft objects, and 184 works by Charles
E. Burchfield. In recognition of this tremendous donation, as well as his ongoing
support of the arts, the Burchfield Art Center was rededicated as the Burchfield-Penney
Art Center in 1994. Center
exhibitions are selected and organized to be innovative and educational in order
to provide various audiences with a broad experience of unique regional artistic
achievements and cultural history. Through
its affiliation with Buffalo State College, the museum encourages learning and
celebrates our richly creative and diverse community. The Center is a multifaceted
cultural forum for the arts and regularly hosts readings of poetry and prose,
concerts, performances, workshops, and lectures and panel discussions related
to exhibitions. Museum
