The Buffalo Psychiatric Center was constructed to house New York State's fifth asylum for the insane in the 19th century. Fredrick Law Olmsted collaborated on the siting of the buildings and landscaping plans. The buildings were used for the care and treatment of the mentally ill from 1880 to 1974.
