The
Boies-Lord House is a Greek revival house built between 1840 and 1860. The name
of the house is derived from two men. Horace Boies owned the house for a short
time and went on to become Governor of Iowa. Dr. Alvah Lord practiced medicine
from the house from 1925 until 1975. The
Hamburg Antiques Study Group decided to save a typical house that a middle class
family would have lived in when Hamburg was being settled. It was moved by the
group from Main St. to its present location in 1979 because it was going to be
demolished and replaced by a parking lot. Since
then, the house has been restored to look as it did in the mid-19th century, including
the furnishings. The house includes only items pre-dating 1860 such as lard oil
lamps, ingrain carpeting, Currier lithographs, Empire furniture, ironstone china,
rope beds, early stoves, redware, and vegetable ivory sewing items. One room is
furnished as an attorney's office. The
house is open for special events and by appointment. |
